Energy Work is the first publication to reflect on the work of Kathy Barry and Sarah Smuts-Kennedy. Based on the exhibition of the same title staged at Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery in 2022, the book provides comprehensive documentation of their separate presentations across the three levels of the Gallery’s distinctive building. It also features new essays by Robyn Maree Pickens, Jennifer Higgie and Adam Grener, and revised and republished texts by Natasha Conland and Marcus Moore. Together these writers provide a range of insights into the practices of each artist who have been working in their unique ways to redirect the languages of abstraction towards the manifestation of unseen energies and dimensions. Beautifully designed by Alice Bonifant and edited by Christina Barton, this book is an important contribution to the literature on contemporary artists in Aotearoa New Zealand.
